Meet The DRG Team: Ron Rawski

We’d like to introduce you to one of the talented individuals who make The DRG a knowledgeable and creative research consulting partner, not to mention a great place to work. Meet Ron Rawski, CIO and SVP of Technology and Administrative Services. Ron has been with The DRG since 2001 and is part of The DRG leadership team.

What’s your key role at The DRG?

My focus is to provide direct leadership to our Research Centers and operational teams, which includes technology, compliance, and vendor management, to name a few. When not serving our teams, I’m working on strategic goals as part of our leadership team.

Tell us about the path that led you to where you are today.

I got my start in marketing research 25 years ago as a daytime call center interviewer. I quickly went on to manage a call center and then a team of survey programmers for an international research firm. Years later, while obtaining my degree in Business Management, I decided it was time to move to a company where I could challenge my management skills and have a greater opportunity to make a significant, daily impact. That was 15 years ago when I applied for this great opportunity at The DRG. First on my agenda was to learn the technical side of marketing research, including the server and network infrastructure. Since then, I’ve helped grow the company through my technical and administrative direction, with a focus on efficiency, productivity, and security.

What are some of the best things about working at The DRG?

One of the most rewarding parts of my job and, fortunately for me, it happens every day, is the opportunity to find solutions. Whether it’s a strategic, technical, or administrative challenge, there’s nothing more gratifying than working with a team to find a solution that moves us forward.

However, I’d say the best part of working at The DRG is the people. We work with some of the most down-to-earth, generous, and dedicated employees. It is truly an honor to serve as one of their leaders. These professionals are dead serious about customer satisfaction, but they have a great sense of humor. That’s important for me. I couldn’t work in a business that was serious 100% of the time. We’re in business to be a leader at marketing research and to provide highly rewarding careers along the way.

What motivates you and keeps you engaged in your work?

I’m driven by the opportunity to work alongside very talented people; they challenge me to be sharp and prepared for every day. I am also driven by our clients, knowing that they’ve put significant trust in us to help them with their critical business decisions.

As for motivation, I’m motivated by my wife who has been highly supportive of my “always on” work ethic throughout the years. I’m also motivated by my two sons. My oldest has just entered the workforce and, through his outstanding success at his first part-time job, has confirmed that the actions of his father are indeed speaking louder than words. I just wish he would clean his room more often.

When times get tough, how do you motivate others to overcome obstacles?

If we’ve had the courage to try something, we have never wasted our time. If we didn’t happen to succeed this time, at least we learned during the process. No one learns anything by getting lucky. If you’re following tested and proven DRG procedures today, it means that someone from our past has failed at least once in trying to get us to this point.

When our CFO, Robert Dieringer, Jr., succumbed to cancer in 2013, we faced the biggest setback in our company history. As Robert would have done, we put our heads together, agreed to a strategy, and we pressed on to figure it out. Since then, I personally have the confidence that we can get through anything. A positive attitude like that truly radiates through the rest of the company.

The DRG’s tagline is “Turning Intelligence into Opportunity.” What does this mean to you?

The DRG is a 43-year-strong firm with a history of developing and nurturing talent from within our organization. We maintain a strong tradition of high-quality standards and exceptional customer service, which is evident as our team members grow in experience and begin to rise to critical roles in the company. Our turnover is low, thanks to our dedicated employees and their team of managers, which allows us to have a truly well-developed DRG brand, supported by a team of knowledgeable professionals. Our focus on critical thinking and consultation, along with the data and insights we gather in our research, is the “Intelligence” that we offer to our customers.

The Opportunities? Well, those are endless. Inside The DRG, there are daily opportunities to do what you do best, and an opportunity to allow your career to develop in any direction that your personal growth takes you. For our customers, our mature brand of experienced consultation is known for unveiling the “Opportunities” for making accurately-informed business decisions.

As a leader/manager at The DRG, do you have any tips/advice to share?

These two tips would apply to any employee, but especially those leaders on the rise. Tip 1:  Always know your audience. The satisfaction of your customers depends greatly on your ability to understand their goals and objectives before you begin each project. If not customers, your audience can also be those that you report to or the teams that you’re a part of. Always take time to clarify what people expect from you in your role.

With the audience in mind, I give you Tip 2:  You’re only as good as the questions you ask. The quickest way to failure is believing that you have all the experience necessary as you approach a new challenge. Make informed decisions by first taking the time to tap into the experience and expectations of those around you.
